Start-stop batteries: why a standard 096 won’t do in a car that needs AGM

Parts desk, The Road Sailors ·

A standard flooded battery and an AGM start-stop battery can share the same case size and terminal layout. Drop the wrong one into a start-stop car and it will start the engine perfectly well — for a few months.

Why start-stop is hard on batteries

Every time the engine stops at the lights, the battery carries the lights, fans, infotainment and pumps on its own, then has to restart the engine. That can be dozens of deep discharges on a single commute. Regenerative charging then pushes charge back in quickly. A standard battery is not built for that cycling.

The three types

  • Standard flooded (SLI): fine for cars without start-stop.
  • EFB (enhanced flooded): for entry-level start-stop systems.
  • AGM (absorbent glass mat): for cars with start-stop and brake-energy regeneration. If the car came with AGM, it needs AGM.

You can upgrade from EFB to AGM, but never go down from AGM to EFB or standard.

Register the new battery

Many cars, including BMWs, need the new battery registered with a diagnostic tool so the charging system knows it is new and what type it is. Skip this and the car may overcharge the new battery or keep start-stop disabled.

Before you blame the battery

  1. Check for parasitic drain with the car locked and asleep.
  2. Test the charging voltage with the engine running.
  3. Clean and tighten terminals and the earth strap.
